The brief
Each student documented one Lucknow monument. I chose Rumi Darwaza to understand how its arch was set out with simple geometry, before any computers.
Two centres
Each half of the arch is drawn from a centre on the opposite springing point, with a radius equal to the span.
Cusped edge
The scalloped inner edge divides each curve into equal segments. It softens the opening and catches light.
Proportion
The rectangular frame around the arch is very close to a 1 : 1.618 rectangle.
